AbstractIn this research, performance of EVNT's CDMA2000-1X (Electricity of Viet Nam Telecom) mobile network in Hue province is evaluated based on investigation of traffic data measured on the radio channels by drive test and on-site statistical data. By studying the traffic data, we see that the performance of system is not met with the pre-defined criteria. Through an analysis of the traffic data, methods to improve the system performance are recommended and carried out. Firstly, the performance of the system can be greatly improved through coverage improvement with an adjustment of cell layout and antenna configuration. Coverage improvement is not only the increase in coverage range but also the improvement of signal strength at street level or in-building to avoid "coverage holes". Secondly, the system performance can be slightly improved by fine tuning system parameters such as neighbor list, access parameters and handoff parameters. The result of practical works carried out in EVNT's CDMA2000-1X show that, by adjustments of cell layout (like adding cells, repositioning cells) and antenna configuration, the call access failure rate and call drop rate decrease greatly from 6.45% and 2% to 3.7% and 1.57% respectively. By fine tuning system parameters, these above mentioned metrics continuously fall to 3.5% and 1.46% accordingly. Furthermore, the voice quality is also much improved after network adjustments, representing by the decrease of FER. Besides methods to improve the system performance, network planning for expansion of EVNT's CDMA2000-lx is also mentioned in this research study. Through link budget calculation and base station capacity, we can estimate the number of sites needed for expansion of network in 14 Mekong delta provinces. By utilizing network planning tool, we can not only obtain position, and antenna configuration of the sites but also Ec/lo pilot coverage plots, handoff status plots, forward link noise plots etc.
