AbstractNowadays, the customer's requirements about using new services and applications based on Internet have been more and more essential and increasing. Thus, engineers usually find new technologies which can combine many protocols (such as Frame Relay, Asynchronous Transfer Mode, Point to Point Protocol) into only one network. Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a development by the Internet community. It seeks to combine the flexibility of the IP network layer with the benefits conferred by a connection oriented approach to networking. MPLS is a label switched system that can carry multiple network layer protocols. Therefore, it satisfies these pressing requirements. As a result, measurement and analysis of MPLS traffic become important and necessary for network operation and management purposes. This research study demonstrates the MPLS traffic measurement and analysis in a Metropolitan Area Network of HoChiMinh City. The statistical analyses including traffic profiles, delay profiles were performed. The total number of subscribers connecting to the MPLS network at stations and the charging of subscribers were also observed and analyzed. The results of traffic measurements, which are displayed by hourly, daily and weekly profiles, show that MPLS traffic in working hours is frequently larger than in other hours. Moreover, the busy hour of out-traffic (outgoing traffic) is often in morning while that of in-traffic (incoming traffic) is in evening. The average traffic volume of residential and business subscriber is 9894 Mbytes and 53088 Mbytes each month, respectively. The monthly traffic volume per subscriber is nearly uniformly distributed from 1 Gigabyte to 99 Gigabytes. The total number of subscribers (at SW-HVU) connecting to MPLS network is more usually in working hours more about 8 times than in sleeping hours. However, the average throughput of bandwidth per subscriber is less in working hours than in other hours. Explanation for this is that speed rate of network often increases quickly in sleeping hours, as a result of few subscribers connecting to MPLS network
