Abstract | The Khasis, a small ethnic minority group of Bangladesh are matrilineal and matrilocal. They live in the north-eastern part of Bangladesh, in areas of which they have been living for centuries. Like it is common for indigenous communities, they are discriminated against and marginalized, but have managed to keep most of their distinct cultural practices intact. This study, exploratory in nature, tried to assess if the Khasis, due to certain factors, are going through a shift in traditional practices. The method employed for this study was qualitative and largely ethnographic in nature. Matrilocality, which is seen as quintessentially Khasi practice is changing, as Khasi women moving to their husbands' homes are becoming common and acceptable. Economic reasons and influence of the dominant culture of the country are bringing about this change. |
