AbstractThis study deals with a simple numerical procedure for evaluating the safety of D-shaped tunnel linings in Seoul subways during an earthquake. The stress state of the soil around the tunnel during an earthquake is considered by the sum of the static and seismic loadings. The total thrust and moment distributions in the lining are obtained as the sum of the values of thrust and moment due to static and seismic loadings. The proper modeling mesh for D-shaped lining is chosen by comparing the numerical results of thrust and moment distributions for a circular lining with those by analytical solutions for seismic loading. Then the thrust and moment distributions, for typical Dshaped lining in Seoul subways, with respect to various horizontal acceleration coefficients are estimated using FLAC20 . Finally the safety of lining during an earthquake is evaluated by comparing the allowable tangential stress and strain with numerical results. It seems that the concrete linings in Seoul subways would be safe up to the earthquake kh=0.5 , with the assumption of various lining with intact and elastic properties.
