AbstractIn this research the machine vision based speed control algorithm for an intelligent vehicle has been developed. The purpose is to force the controlled vehicle to follow the leading vehicle, when the leading vehicle turns left or turns right the controlled vehicle has to do so. It means that the system has to control the speed and the direction of the controlled vehicle. To do this task the system has to detect the leading vehicle, determine the distance between two vehicles, and the direction of the leading vehicle. To reduce the complexity of the vehicle detection algorithm, the leading vehicle is drawn with a red circle on its back. The image processing program uses color based segmentation to detect this circle. The distance between two vehicles and the direction of the leading vehicle will be calculated from the center of the circle. These parameters are transmitted to the microcontroller used to control the steering motor and accelerator motor in order to have the desire speed and direction of the controlled vehicle. A prototype was made and experiment has been done. The controlled vehicle can follow the leading vehicle on the flat straight road, curve road at low speed. It can also follow the leading vehicle atcrossroads where the leading vehicle turns left or right.
