Abstract | Filament winding was a fabrication process for fiber reinforced composite structures which allow the production of strong and lightweight parts. Most winding machines were two or some three axis machines that are just suitable for the production of axismetric part. Consequently, a computer controlled winding machines with even more axes have been built. A filament winding machine is very similar in its basic function regarding independent of machine axes to the multi-axis milling machine regarding. However, a multi axis milling machines cannot perform filament winding without pay-out eye and a mandrel. The filament winding process was determined and the possibility aspects of 5-Axis milling machine to operate winding process were investigated in this work. The cylindrical pressure vessel model was constructed as a mandrel of winding process following parameters: cylinder radius, cylinder wind angle, in Unigraphics NX3. The orientation of fiber, winding angle, winding pattern and the required number of winding for surface coverage was defined and calculated. The CAM systems for filament winding were fiber path generation, the calculation of machine path and simulation of these paths. For the fiber path generation, the modeled mandrel was defined to generate the cutting location file (CL-file) and then generated G-code for the 5-axis milling machine path of winding regarding winding parameter. Due to the fact that winding softwares were not available for students, the CNC machine simulation software was adapted and the verification of fiber path can be demonstrated by Vericut 5.4 where the cutting tool was replaced by the fiber pay-out eye prior to the actual machine |
