AbstractThis study deals with an analytical procedure for evaluating the safety of tunnel lining in Bangkok MRT subway during an earthquake. The available analytical solutions for thrust and moment in the lining of a circular tunnel due to static and seismic loading are investigated. The new analytical solutions for thrust and moment due to additional seismic loading have been presented. The results of the thrust and moment, by analytical solutions for the seismic-induced ovaling deformation of the lining, are compared with those of the numerical analysis using FLAC2D. The analytical solutions are applied to a typical concrete lining used for tunnels in Bangkok MRT subway to investigate the safety of lining during an earthquake. It seems that the concrete lining would be safe up to the earthquake of kh = 0.5, based on the assumptions of the continuous circular lining with intact and elastic properties. The ground response around the tunnel is also investigated by using SHAKE91.
