AbstractLosses of water due to leakage occur in every distribution network- only volume varies. Sometimes the figure is so high for operating organization to survive. The situation is severe in developing countries. To control the losses, it is important to understand the causes of the losses and current operating conditions, and to have a proper investment plan. In this study, detail analysis of operating conditions, annual water balance, household night use, pressure exponent, night flow, pressure management, important performance indicators and economics of leakage have been done. To optimize the pressure, EPANET hydraulic model was developed. Different pressure profiles were analyzed to get the optimum pressure profile by network analysis which was tested by implementing in actual network. The economic level of leakage has been estimated for the current situation and optimum operating profiles have been suggested and corresponding economic levels have been estimated. Again, influences of pressure on marginal cost of leakage control and the influence of pressure and marginal cost of water on the economic level of leakage have been analyzed. During this study, two important curves have been developed. In the first curve, relationships have been developed among the cost of leakage control, level of leakage and the operating inlet pressure. It is very easy tool to estimate the 3rd parameter if any of the two parameters can be fixed out by drawing a parallel curve. In the second curve, a relationship has been developed among economic level of leakage, operating inlet pressure and the marginal cost of water. This curve may also be used in a similar way as the first curve by knowing any of the two parameters and drawing a parallel line for a marginal cost of water. From the analysis, it is found that high percentage of background loss occur due to the aged pipe network. Although pressure is not too high, simple redistribution of the pressure profile can reduce the leakage. Current efforts to control leakage are not optimum and MWA can invest more 0.62 Baht for per m3 of water within economic level of leakage.
