AbstractThe anisotropic strength of the Bangkok clay was studied. The shearing behavior in each direction of shearing surface were investigated using the newly developed direct shear apparatus for which shearing can be made in horizontal plane, 45° plane and vertical plane of soil sample. The results showed that the shear strength of recompression clay in vertical plane was 20% and 34% higher than those in the horizontal plane for samples depths of 4 and 6m while it was almost the same value as the strength in 45° inclined plane. For specimens of higher OCR's (prepared using the SIIANSEP technique), relationship between the normalized undrained shear strength (Su/a'vc) in horizontal, inclined (45°) and vertical plane against OCR value were evaluated. It was found that the anisotropy in strength increased with OCR of the clay. The field vane tests using conventional vane blade and diamond vane blade were performed. In the conventional vane, the total torque was uncoupled by torque generated at top-bottom of the vane and torque generated at cylindrical side of the vane. Both torques have been simulated from the horizontal shear strength and vertical shear strength obtained from the direct shear tests. In the diamond vane of 45°, the total torque was only generated along inclined surface corresponding to the inclined shear strength from the inclined 45° direct shear test. The experimental showed that the field vane test results agreed well with those obtained from the simulations in laboratory testing.
