AbstractThis study assesses and examines the stakeholders' perception and participation on the collaborative forest management (CFM) in Sabaiya, Parsa district of Nepal. Various social research tools such as household survey; key informants interview; and formal and informal group discussions were conducted to collect qualitative and quantitative information. Related policies, guidelines and others documents were also reviewed. The study revealed that people of the study area were aware about the importance of forest resources and participatory forest management practice in Terai. However majority of respondents were not familiar about CFM program. Most of CFM related decisions were not made in participatory manner. Most of the respondents were not satisfied with the existing CFM benefit sharing mechanism of 75% to government and 25% to local level. Extension activities and timely availability of information were also lacking that resulted low people participation in CFM. However, some activities such as fuelwood distribution; training; support for local institutional strengthen, local people empowerment and capacity building were found to be effective. CFM practices were at the initial stage and no likely impacts were identified. Responsible agencies should focus on establishing a networking and monitoring system for effective communication as well as strong CFM legitimatized guidelines. Both close and distant users should be included in all level of CFM activities
