AbstractThe ground behavior due to shield tunnelling in Bangkok MRTA was investigated using the three-dimensional finite difference method program FLAC30 using the elastic-plastic model for the soil material with undrained deformation. The ground movements from twin tunneling were explored with respect to sequence of tunneling, namely; In case of distance between the tunnels spaced at 10 m, The magnitude of surface settlement and the ground loss (Vs) of twin tunnels is greater than single tunnel but not up to twice. On another word, in case of distance between the tunnels 20 m, the ground loss (Vs) of twin tunnels is still greater than the single tunnel. Futhermore, The superposition of two single tunnel may use to predict settlement over twin tunnels in this study. The result agrees with the the prediction made by O'Reilly and New (1991) and Attewell and Woodman (1982). In addtion, The ground settlement above the twin tunnels launched simultaneously is slightly greater than the twin tunnels launched consecutively. Conversely, at depth 27 m the displacement is slightly smaller. Finally, the investigation of the effect of tunneling on adjacent pile explained that the piles helps to reduce the ground settlement and displacement, it performs like a retaining structure and reduce latteral displacement due to the tunneling regardless of the deflection of pile or pile tilt.
