AbstractCoated paper properties are heavily affected by the base paper properties. In turn, variations in base paper properties depend on variations of filler retention, which is affected by filler types, retention aid systems and refining levels applied. Therefore, in this study, the base paper sheets are made in laboratory scale with the changing of refining levels, filler types, and filler loading via changing of retention aid system. Filler types including PCC, GCC and kaolin clay varying in particle size, particle shape and particle size distribution are used. Filler retention is investigated by using retention aid systems including single system (PAM), and dual systems (PAfP AM and DADMACfP AM). Refining affects fiber properties and amount of fines in pulp suspension that also strongly affect paper properties. A mix of softwood and hardwood pulp is refined at three levels (targets: 20 SR, 30 SR, and 40 SR). Uncoated and coated papers are formed and paper properties are tested under standard conditions with standard methods in the lab
