Abstract | The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the impact of implementing total quality management on the firm's innovation performance based on a survey of 204 companies in both, the manufacturing and service sectors, in Vietnam. Firstly, the effect of organizational characteristics - low/high innovation, ownership, size, and industry - on total quality management (TQM) practices in Vietnamese manufacturing and service companies has been examined. Descriptive statistics show that customer focus and top management commitment have the high rate of implementation while information and analysis system, education and training, employee empowerment, and process management are at the lowest rate. MANOVA indicates a difference on TQM practices among companies with different levels (low/high) of innovation, size, and industry type. The significant difference of TQM practices among the low and high innovation performance companies is noteworthy. However, there is no evidence supporting the difference on TQM practices among companies that differ in ownership. In this study, a conceptual model has been established to clarify the relationship between TQM practices (independent variable) and innovation performance (dependent variable). The findings show a significant positive impact of TQM on innovation. Leadership and people management, process and strategic management, and having an open organization are practices that show a positive impact on innovation. Company size and ownership have a moderating effect on the relationship between TQM and innovation. There is no evidence to support the difference of the impact of TQM practices on innovation with respect to manufacturing and service companies. The results of this study are useful for business managers in Vietnam who want to improve their company's business performance by creating more innovations with the help of quality management practices |
