AbstractCOMET is a successful collaborative intelligent tutoring system for medical PBL developed by a group of scientists in Asian Institute of Technology and Thammasat Medical School. Current version of COMET can understand students' activities while they are drawing hypotheses and causal relations, but not what they are chatting with each other. Chat comprehension can be a knowledge source that contributes value to the automated tutoring. We bring together the knowledge that works on internet chat data and UMLS ontology to come up with an algorithm to understand chat topics after observing only a few chat lines. Clustering is used to find the thread of conversation or context of a small number of current chat lines. Chat topics are then identified based on that context. The relevance of chat lines to a thread and a thread to a topic is determined not only by words repetition but also the relations of medical concepts in UMLS Metathesaurus Hierarchy. The algorithm, demonstrated with a java application, gains encouraging feedback from medical experts.
