Abstract | Web-based information collections contain explicit knowledge encoded in each document, as well as implicit knowledge that can be discovered through the relationships between documents, such as the experts and main concepts in a domain. In large collections or websites, it is often difficult to discover these social and conceptual relationships by simply browsing over the documents. This thesis investigates the effectiveness of graph visualization techniques for discovering these implicit relationships between documents. It also describes the design and implementation of an interactive visual prototype integrated into a webbased Content Management System (CMS). The document collection in the website is represented as a graph where nodes represent individual documents, authors and concepts, and edges represent the authorship and descriptive relationships between them. The prototype enables a user to interactively explore this complex graph. An experiment comparing this visual prototype with traditional browsing found that users greatly prefer visualization for exploring relationships between documents, as well as several limitations of the current implementation. |
