AbstractThe e-commerce afforded by Internet has radically transformed the business landscape and brought in a new economy. SMEs particularly in the developing countries like Bhutan could create new business opportunities found with the use of internet and contribute to the nation's economic growth. One of the fastest growing industries in Bhutan is the tourism. The growth of tourism brought along with it a growth in handicrafts business as tourists make the highest customer segment for Bhutanese handicrafts. But all of the sales have been through walk-in to the brick-and mortar outlets. This research study analyses the prospects of B2C e-commerce for Bhutanese handicrafts through the readiness assessment of three key indicators: organization, Internet infrastructure and supporting e-banking service. Most importantly, the result shows that the managers/owners of SMEs in the handicrafts industry perceive at least some kind of benefits at the minimum while the other half recognizes the strategic importance of e-commerce adoption and Internet usage. This perspective and the other indicators signify enterprises are "ready" to establish online portals currently and have the "prospects" to move directly into transactions-integrated stage of ecommerce within about a year. Recommendations are also included at the end as they may form valuable guide for SMEs considering e-commerce strategy in their business decisions.
