AbstractInformation Communication Technologies (ICT) and e-business have revolutionized the entire tourism industry in the world. Meanwhile, the European tourism industry in particular has remained the biggest market in terms of number of tourists' arrivals and revenues over the past 50 years. Using the literature and reports that deal with the issue, this research discusses the impact of ICT and e-business on the structure of the entire European tourism industry and on its composing sub-sectors. This work demonstrates that ICT has caused restructuring phenomenon (intermediation, dis-intermediation and re-intermediation in parallel) within the industry. It shows that ICT improved the operating efficiency of companies as well as the planning and booking experience of customers. It also highlights the dichotomy in the use of ICT and e-business between large European companies and SMEs. The study demonstrates that in all European tourism sub-sectors, the use of ICT and e-business solutions is critical for the strategic and operational management of not only large companies but also for small and medium size companies.
