AbstractWhen a portal effectively communicates its contents, it is transformed from being a window of information, to becoming a door of knowledge. This research advocates portal's use of knowledge structures as an effective language to communicate its information to users, especially when displayed visually. More than information transfer, knowledge structures rendered visually can enhance expressiveness of a portal and progress knowledge- building of users. To test the effectiveness of this theory, a case study was carried out, developed a simulated model interface and conducted an evaluation. Results of the evaluation validated the claim that the use of knowledge structures, rendered visually greatly enhances the expressiveness of the portal thus extending its functionality to support not only information gathering of users but more than that, knowledge building.
