AbstractThis paper intends to analyze the influence of the Asian Crisis on the Thai banking sector in general and, especially, the subsequent reforms in the field of credit risk management in the Thai commercial banking sector. This paper studies the performance of the major banks in Thailand and tries to identify possible cause and effect relationships between the performance and their credit risk management advancements and reforms. Substantial attention has been paid to the risk management practices in the Thai banking sector since the Asian Crisis and drastic changes have been introduced, which have resulted in great impact on the operation of the banks. Three leading commercial banks in Thailand, i.e. Bangkok Bank, Krung Thai Bank, Kasikorn BANK (formerly, Thai Farmers Bank), are examined to compare their pre- and post- Asian Crisis credit risk management practices and analyze the effects. The coming adoption of Basel II in 2008 by Thai banks will be a vivid illustration of the strengthening of risk management among Thai banks. The comparative study and analyses of the pre- and post-Crisis risk management practices of the three representative banks reveal that a more prudential and intact risk management mechanism and mature practices have ensured healthier operation and resulted in better financial performances of the banks, e.g. NPLs control.
