Abstract | The sensitivity of the available water resources in a region to the fluctuations in the climate makes the climatic state a significant parameter in long-term water resources planning. This work is an attempt to quantify the impact of climate change on Mahanadi River Basin in India. Climate change impact analysis is carried out for the years 2000, 2025, 2050, 2075 and 2100. Water availability is estimated using Institute of Industrial Science Distributed Hydrologic Model (IISDHM). For future scenarios under climate change conditions, precipitation output of Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis General Circulation Model (CCCma GCM) are used as input parameter for the DHM. Water demands for domestic, irrigation and industrial sectors are estimated for the considered years. For the year 2000, water demand is based on the relevant data obtained from local sources. Water demand for the future scenarios are projected from the scenario for year 2000 utilizing the contemporary population and industrial growth rate; and landuse pattern. Analysis is confined for the month of September and April at a subcatchment level. A major conclusion of the study is that the river basin is expected to experience progressively increasing intensities of flood during the month of September and drought during April over the considered years. The subcatchment experiencing peak water stress for future years has been predicted. |
