AbstractAs project management has become a recognized discipline, and as organizations explicitly regard themselves as project oriented, the success of projects is brought into the limelight. Therefore, success of projects, primarily in the areas of initiating, planning, execution and controlling, has become the focus of assessment of the effectiveness of the project manager in implementing the projects, and the efficacy of the organization in supporting the project manager in pursuit of overall organizational objectives. In order to improve the current project management practices and state, one should first have the knowledge of the existing industry condition. The objective of this research survey is to analyze the state of project management practices in the software industry of Pakistan by exploring the methodologies currently being used in the Pakistani software industry, which will help identify the gaps that can be appropriately and systematically filled to enhance project management maturity level of the overall industry in general and IT organizations in particular.
