Abstract | This research investigates the effects of foreign ownership on firm performance in Thailand. Types of foreign investors are taken into account in the research i.e. foreign strategic partnership investors and foreign financial institution investors. I find that foreign strategic partnership firms perform better than domestic firms according to the accounting-based performance measurement (ROA). However, foreign financial institution firms do not perform better than domestic firms. For the market-based performance measurement, there is no evidence showing that foreign firms (both foreign strategic partnership and foreign financial institution firms) outperform domestic firms. I also find that foreign strategic partnership investors have higher incentive to monitor a firm, and play a more active role to monitor and manage the firms than foreign financial institution investors through the board membership. Therefore, foreign strategic partnership firms perform better than domestic firms, while foreign financial institution firms do not. During a shock (whether it is positive or negative shock), foreign strategic partnership investors are the investors who play a role as stabilizers in the Thai stock market. |
