AbstractTransmission system plays a vital role in electric system of every country. The construction of new transmission facilities, such as lines and substations, requires long term planning and large capital investment. The main purpose of transmission expansion planning is to determine the locations and size of new transmission facilities in order to meet future demand in economical and reliable manner of every country as well as neighboring countries. Therefore, careful study to evaluate the planning is required. This thesis identifies the concepts of power transfers on transmission line, stability considerations applied to 500kV Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) transmission expansion planning for 2006-2015. Analysis and evaluations of the transmission system with generation planning aim to satisfy the forecasted load demand under thermal limitation, voltage limitation and small signal stability limitation. In this thesis, a genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to determine the optimal allocation of TCSC device for maximizing the loadablity of entire power system within a limitation of generation capability. For each TCSC location, GA searches for load at each bus, TCSC parameter, real power generations except slack bus in power system. Test result indicates that TCSC can increase the loadability up to 0.5% or 100MW leading to efficient utilization of EVN transmission system for 2006 - 2015
