AbstractPower output of a gas turbine is directly proportional to the mass flow rate of compressed air. Unfortunately, the mass flow rate of air decreases with the increase in ambient temperature due to the decrease of air density. Therefore, the capacity of gas turbine generator power plants is significantly degraded due to the rising ambient air temperature, especially in the hot season. The gas turbines in Cantho Thermal Power Plant have faced the same problem as mentioned hereinbefore. This study determines the optimum inlet cooling system for recovering the degraded capacity of these gas turbines during the periods of high ambient temperatures at the plant site. A technical assessment is undertaken to propose the most suitable cooling system that allows to improve the machine power output and lower the heat rate. Along with the technical assessment, an economic analysis is conducted to demonstrate the practical feasibility of the suggested alternative. Also, preliminary investigations have been undertaken on the existing plant space and the inlet air duct structure of the gas turbine to ensure that all requirements for the installation a cooling system are satisfied. Results of the study also reveal the positive effects of the proposed action on the global environment which is being seriously threatened today. This study could be treated as the feasibility study for the project of restoring the designed capacity of the gas turbine in Cantho Thermal Power Plant. Through this study, Electricity of Vietnam or Cantho Thermal Power Plant has an overview of the project such as the scope of works, technical requirements, investment, benefits and payback periods, etc. Moreover, this study provides the fundamentals for Electricity of Vietnam to consider the option of recovering the designed capacity of other gas turbine power generation plants in southern Vietnam
