AbstractSediment Transport is a field of active research and numerous mathematical models have been developed to predict the morphological behaviour in open channels. For the purpose of verification of these models, the model results are compared with observations made during either field or laboratory study. In this study, GSTARS3 (Generalized Sediment Transport Model for Alluvial River Simulation version 3) has been used to verify its results with the help of observations made during experiments conducted in a straight laboratory flume to study two-dimensional propagation of triangular sand-pile constructed in the middle of the flume. The verification is based on hydraulic performance as well as comparison of resulting cross-sectional profiles and evaluation of error indices. Based on the study, it is concluded that the hydraulic computation of GSTARS3 is inadequate and some times yield highly erroneous results. However, the morphological component of the model has shown to yield very good and reliable results. The morphological computation module of GSTARS3 has been verified, but the hydraulic computation module needs to be checked and improved for proper working of the model.
