Abstract | The purpose of this paper is to explore the different products that a manufacturing plant can make in Thailand and Ecuador and also understand the different strategies linked to those different products. While using a wide range of secondary data, the study draws on the development of the chitin and its derivate industry since the last decade with some projections over the next few years. The findings suggest that there are a large number of opportunities that are not exploited. This includes a wide range of company type, from Small Medium Enterprise (SME) with less than five employees to a partnership with a multinational company. However, some countries risk failure due to perhaps a lack of knowledge or due to existing investment regulations which can discourage investment in this sector. Risk, return on investment and breakeven point are the major deciding factors. Today, Ecuador is completely out of this market, thus it seems adequate to establish a company targeting the agricultural market. In Thailand, companies have been manufacturing chitosan for more than ten years, regarding the competition. The study has identified that the best opportunity is to target a niche market in partnership with a cosmetic company. More research is needed to fully understand the costs of manufacturing the return on investment possibilities. |
