AbstractPasak Jolasid Reservoir has faced many problems in its current operation. When there was a big storm in 2002, floods occurred in the downstream area. However, this dam cannot provide enough water supplies for irrigation area in dry seasons. The existing rule curve of the reservoir needs to revise to reduce flood damages and to supply irrigation demand desired; a study should be carried out to find an optimal operational rule curve for the reservoir by Genetic Algorithm (GA). The GA model was applied to determine the optimal upper and lower rule curves on monthly basis of Pasak Jolasid Reservoir. This study developed a reservoir operational rule curve by GA optimization for Pasak Jolasid Reservoir to release water for irrigation with maximum net benefit subject to constraints on water shortage and flood damages, and compared the operation rule curve and maximum net benefit with other conventional methods such as HEC3 and Standard Operating Policy (SOP). The results of simulation from GA model were compared with HEC-3 model and SOP. This study has three scenarios (75%, 85% and 100% of all irrigation area). From simulation, it can be concluded that GA result is better than both HEC-3 and SOP in term of net benefit and water management in the reservoir such as loss due to flood or spilled water.
