AbstractA localized wireless system for mitigation of hazards in riverine transportations consisting three modes of communications, 1) On-board communications, 2) Environmental data collection and 3) Emergency communications is discussed in this thesis study. A large numbers of sensors are placed all over the riverways to collect necessary data for safe transportations. The design goals for the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) for riverine transports are Scalability, Energy efficiency and Spectral efficiency. TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) technique can give scalability as well as spectral efficiency to a WSN. A TD-SCDMA MAC protocol based wireless sensor network is a good solution to collect the data from the densely deployed sensors. One Time slot accommodates more than one CDMA nodes, which gives scalability and spectral efficiency to the wireless networks. The application of TD-SCDMA channel in the MAC layer of WSN is studied in this thesis by analyzing the scalability, energy efficiency and spectral efficiencies for riverine transportations. Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) is a well known technology used mostly on Intelligent Transport System (ITS) on the 5.8GHz frequency range. The application of DSRC in riverine system with virtual cell concept is selected for transport to riverside communications in this study. Due to the several base stations, both intra-virtual and inter-virtual cellular zone interferences are produced. Therefore the size of virtual cellular zone and number of base stations in each zone are needed to be examined. In order to determine number of base stations and their coverage area in virtual cellular zone, the cell outage probabilities are investigated for single and two bases per virtual cell system.
