Abstract | This research dealt with changes in socio-economic conditions of the minority ethnic group (Khmu), in Houymor village, Vanvieng district, Vientiane province of Lao PDR. The research studied the roles of women and men in the upland rice fields, and then explored livelihoods affected by decline in the shifting cultivation of the Khmu peoples. The research also provided recommendation for further improvement of the situation. Data and information were collected through questionnaire survey, focus group discussion and observations. The study showed that the Khmu people in the study area had created a number of changes with both positive and negative impacts. The current situation of the village is that, villagers try to find jobs to replace the method of making upland rice. Lao governments try to support villagers to improve their livelihoods. However, in this situation women are facing a number of problems, they are the people who are responsible for each meal for family members they always had conflict with husbands when there was lack of food for their daily life. Children lack opportunities to change and continue their education after completing their primary school in their village because family do not have enough money to support and at the same time children have to help domestic work especially girls. Villagers as well as government try to reduce the destruction of forest by avoiding shifting cultivation; in the difficult situation in Houymor village, government as well as villagers themselves needs to pay attention to the situation to improve their livelihoods. |
