Abstract | The research study starts with the argument that it is necessary to move distance learning beyond learning management system (LMS) and the use of a personal learning environment (PLE) using social software is a recent trend addressing the limitation of centralized learning management system. Personal learning environment helps in promoting learning through sharing of knowledge, conversation, and reflection in a social/academic setting through the use of personal tools and engaging the learners in different kinds of social networks. An open source web application combining the elements of weblogging, e-portfolios, and social networking was analyzed, developed and implemented at http://www.bhutanboard.com/ in a way that it moves the organization of distance learning beyond centralized and integrated LMS towards promoting learning through learner empowerment and learners engagement in different networks by building their own personal learning communities. The effort demonstrated the development of educational social software tools to support learning activities and achievement of lifelong learning through learner-centered, learner-controlled and collaborative networks which was further validated through the website online logs, questionnaire, e-mails and interviews with the registered user of the PLE who were mostly the in-service teachers in Bhutan registered under the Distance Teacher Education Programme (DTEP) of Samtse college of Education. |
