AbstractDomestic wastewater management in Hanoi city has faced many environmental challenges due to increasing of urban population and development. Domestic wastewater affects to quality of the environment and people's life. The purpose of this thesis is to study the existing situation of domestic wastewater management in Hanoi city and to propose integrated management framework to contribute improving the management effectiveness. Based on qualitative and quantitative analysis methodology, domestic wastewater in Hanoi city is one of the causes for water pollution due to the lack of proper treatment before discharging. Relating to domestic wastewater regulations, there are overlapping and inconsistency responsibility. In addition, weak enforcement causes violation occurred without penalty. Institutional ability is still limited. Shortage of high skill labors and lack of cooperation among sectors cause difficulties in effective management. Public are not aware of consequences of domestic wastewater pollution to the public health and living area. There is an insufficient education and dissemination activity on domestic wastewater resulting in no public participation in domestic wastewater management. The investigation showed that there is no existing linkage among technical, regulation, institutional ability and public awareness. In order to improve management effectiveness, domestic wastewater should be practiced by integrated approach include technical, regulations, institutional ability and public awareness. In this study, integrated domestic wastewater approach shows potential in increasing effectiveness by implementing integrated then framework as the direction to carry out IDWM in Hanoi city
