Abstract | As a result of globalization, the number of software development projects being globally distributed and the number of organizations taking part in Globally Distributed Software Development (GDSD) are growing. As more and more companies are becoming involved in GDSD, the number of software development projects experiencing problems and breakdowns has increased and some of the problems and breakdowns can be related to control, coordination and communication between remote software development sites. Therefore, this research attempts to advance knowledge of how software development processes and methodologies can be used to strengthen control, coordination and communication between remote software development sites and lower the risk of encountering the common problems and breakdowns. The research presents a number of inter-site communication patterns, inter-site coordination mechanisms and inter-site control strategies to reduce the common problems and breakdowns in GDSD projects and a conceptual framework is developed based on this. The conceptual framework attempts to compare a traditional approach to software development using Rational Unified Process (RUP) with an agile approach to software development using Serum and eXtreme Programming (XP). The results highlight the ability both approaches have to enable the suggested inter-site communication patterns and inter-site coordination mechanisms and which of the suggested inter-site control strategies they are suitable for |
