Abstract | Social navigation is the process of using information to get the data what the user wants by getting related information from others. Social navigation can be divided into direct and indirect social navigation. Direct social navigation is people trying to find information by using recommendation, guides and products on their criteria. Indirect social navigation is following the trail of other people or getting the information filter based on what the other people think. Social navigation has a potential to help the users in online collaboration. The research presented in this report evaluates the usefulness of social navigation in EDUCO. EDUCO is a computer-supported collaborative learning environment. The undertaken research is about collaborative social navigation in synchronous and asynchronous situation. Synchronous social navigation is the user activities on real time situation. There is no delay to get the information from other party. Asynchronous social navigation is the information based on what the previous users have done and there is delay to get the information from other party. Synchronous and asynchronous social navigation can be direct as well as indirect social navigation. We have evaluated the system to validate our hypothesis that synchronous situation is more attractive than the asynchronous one but our results contradict this hypothesis. Synchronous situation helps the users to show only the current hot issues. The synchronous situation is keep changing and the information is not stable. Asynchronous social navigation is stable because the popularity levels are provided based on previous users' footsteps. The information based on asynchronous situation provides a proof for user trust. The results indicate that asynchronous social navigation is more helpful than synchronous social navigation. |
