Abstract | Information in a website is often difficult to find (with or without a search tool), either because the site is poorly structured or the information seeker's knowledge is incomplete about the content. Faceted Classification System (FCS) is a method of multidimensional description and arrangement of resources by their properties and concepts (metadata) that can significantly improve the information architecture of a website by providing alternative structures for arranging and finding content. This thesis work gives an overview of faceted system research, and implements a prototype FCS within a Content Management System (CMS) by creating example metadata facets in the domain of institutional web. The system is based on open source tools such as Python, MySQL, and Zope-Plone within which a highly generic database schema is developed by nested set model and adjacency list model to represent a tree structure to accommodate any collection of faceted metadata for classifying the resources. An empirical study is conducted where a total of nineteen participants evaluate the prototype interfaces compared to the existing standard system. The null hypotheses are tested through Paired-samples T test and ANOV A with post-hoc analysis. Results found partial support to the prototype FCS, such as; it significantly increases the access to information with increased success score, understanding of content, relevancy in the result set, and satisfaction. The outcomes of the study can significantly contribute to the research of IR community to develop the interfaces with multidimensional taxonomy rather than simple onedimensional taxonomy in the corporate websites. |
