AbstractThe aim of this paper is to identify some of the generic problems that restrict effective development of SME manufacturers in Myanmar. This paper reports the outcomes of a series of in-depth interviews with SME owners within a range of companies in the manufacturing sector in Shwe Pyi Thar industrial zone, Hlaing Thar Yar industrial zone, Mandalay industrial zone and non industrial zone, Yay Nan Chaung industrial zone, Meiktila industrial zone and Magwae non industrial zone.. The interviews focused on the barriers encountered by SMEs entrepreneurs of manufacturing sector in operating their business. The responses from managers were analyzed and revealed a number of generic problems that companies face in operating their business. Identification of the barriers encountered by SMIEs entrepreneurs in accelerating effective development lead to the discussion of possible solutions to overcome these obstacles, and as such, the secondary focus of this paper is to recommend the development of tools to overcome these barriers
