Abstract | This case study examines the phenomenal growth of Sahara India Group, which started off as a Chit Fund Company with a modest capital but within a quarter of a century became a front runner in Indian entrepreneurship. During the 90's when India was awakening to the global changes, Sahara India Group did not lose the opportunity to successfully venture into aviation, infrastructure and housing, consumer products, media and entertainment. The Sahara India Group with its philosophy of "Collective Materialism" has shunned the traditional approach of running business. In India, where most of the big business houses are family owned and profit is the sole objective, Subrata Roy Sahara, Managing Worker & Chairman, believes that "Manpower is always superior to money power." His ideology that the company in itself is a big family and every employee is a family member has created a cult like organization, where loyalty and trust plays an important role in motivating employees. The Group prefers to call the company as "Sahara India Pariwar". The word "Pariwar", in I-lindi language means "family". This study attempts to identify the key growth drivers of the Sahara India Group This would cover the leadership, their philosophy and successful diversification into new ventures. The other dimension of this study would analyze the future challenges of this cult like organization which has grown wondrously and has left a nation spellbound |
