AbstractUdon Thani as a growing city though not in a scant water resource condition currently is increasingly in threat of a potential situation of a strong water demand and less supply due to an unprecedented urban growth in and around the city of Udon Thani. This brings the need of a study of the water resource availability and management options in and around Udon Thani. For the wide semi urban set up in Udon Thani with household and agricultural use being the majority of water use management and technical options were explored- and detailed in this research. This report also explores the link between urban agriculture and wastewater use. The study also looked and discussed the water scarcity and the challenges in providing urban water and sanitation services. Further an overview of water/wastewater management and governance is presented. Alternative technical options for municipalities (and other levels of government) are then presented based on the observations. It was concluded that though health remains a priority concern, wastewater use can provide significant benefits to its users. Non-treatment management options are also needed. Finally, this research found that despite the current trend of water and waste water scenario in Udon Thani is sustainable from the demand and supply side, it is potentially in a threat to lead to a scarce situation. This leads to the need of finding wastewater reuse and other conservation option. This research is more an exploratory research to take stock of the situation and suggesting further studies. The study looked at the possible technical and management options for both water a waste water plan and looked at the possibility of a wastewater use in agricultural sector which has tremendous potential in case of Udon Thani. Use of natural wetlands as pollution mitigation tool also examined and it was found that efforts are needed for the adoption of appropriate wastewater policy. Lastly the study further brings the need of broad level examination of dynamics of water quality indicators and a parallel verification of land use patterns to suggest a broad WWTP use plan for Udon Thani. As per the result in the area there is a variety of water resources available for Udon Thani Municipal area, though the city is mainly dependant of surface water resources. Further it was found that the wastewater from the households does not possess any threatening pollutants thus can be easily planned for reuse plans. Presence of fecal coliform in the wastewater suggested a potential health hazard. Results of the water quality at discharge points at downstream shown successful reduction of impacts suggestively due to assimilation capacity of streams.
