AbstractNowadays, Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) plays more and more important roles in modern life with its much convenience compared to broadband wireline access. The Wireless interoperability Micro wave Access (WiMAX) has been predicted to be a key BW A from the year 2007 onward. Setting up a BWA in Hochiminh City, a biggest city in Vietnam, is essential in this fast - growth City. In this research study, mobile WiMAX is studied in the major aspects of technology and applications in WBA; its advantages and disadvantages in comparison with ADSL. The cell coverage of mobile WiMAX network is planned for the urban, suburban and rural districts in the city based on the cell range and cell capacity calculation with the predicted demand referred to the growth of ADSL subscriber in the first five years 2003 - 2007 taken from Hochiminh City Posts and Telecommunications (HCMC P&T); The population is predicted to calculate the demand in 2012 for WiMAX network. The characteristics of economical growth and habits in Hochiminh City, strategy of Service providers in Vietnam, the reports from Market Research firm like the Northern Sky Research (NSR), from Intel Corporation and also from Ericsson are references to determine the growth trend of WiMAX . The WiMAX demand and the grow are predicted for the five years from 2008 to 2012. In the applications of WiMAX, a medical teleconsultation network is set up with Cho Ray hospital located in District 5 as a center and 11 suburban and rural districts around as clients. The transmission medium is mobile WiMAX as an IP network; the equipments are from Amplesky Company. Through this network, data can be sent, medical diagnostic meeting can be hold and consultation from experienced doctors can be carried out.
