AbstractThe electricity production and supply industry plays a significant role in the economy. This industry has undergone significant reform and deregulation over recent years. Traditionally, the supply and generation of electricity were carried out almost exclusively by governments, and governments carried the supply/demand and capital risk. The dominant paradigm was that electricity was an essential service, requiring government involvement in the sector. Nowadays a national electricity market (NEM) has been created to increase efficiency in the industry by introducing competition directly into the generation and retail sectors, and indirectly into investment decision. The operation of this market is expected to deliver substantial benefits to the energy dependant public. In the past decade, numerous studies have been conducted on the application of neural network to the short load forecasting task. Results obtained show acceptable accuracy during the forecast of normal days. However, it is also observed that there is a decrease of the accuracy during the "anomalous" load periods, which usually relate to holidays and other national events. This study attempts to develop a decision support system for load forecasting in the electricity market based on the neural network. The backpropagation learning algorithm is used for training the network. Not only builds network but also this study also proposes an information system framework for electricity market and shows the integration of the decision support system and a forecasting task. The results of this study are the information system framework of electricity market and the decision support system for market operator, and a Web Site for end-users.
