Abstract | This study reviewed the existing ambient air quality monitoring networks in Vietnam and data management structure to assess the reliability of existing air quality monitoring data in the country. Ambient air quality monitoring data of Vietnam was collected from 17 air automatic stations and 7 non-automatic stations in Vietnam in period from 2002-2005. The preliminary data quality check was conducted. Hanoi city was chosen for a detailed study. For the trends and status analysis, the missing values of data were handled by removing the data point. Outliers were detected and eliminated by SPSS software based on the diurnal fluctuation of each air pollutant. Daily average of TSP, 03, and CO at Lang station was found to exceed the Vietnam national ambient air quality standard at frequency of 4.7%, 6.5% and 0.5% respectively. PM10 concentrations were found high in Hanoi which often exceeds 24-hr air quality of Thailand of 120g/m3 (7.8%). The trend of air quality in Hanoi can not be revealed explicitly due to the short data period. However, there is an increasing trend for all stations except Pb. Air quality indices for Hanoi city were calculated based on ambient air quality monitoring data in the city, which show that AQI is a simple tool to inform the environmental information to the public. Artificial Neural Network was used in this study to examine the relationship between the daily maximum ozone concentration and other air pollutants in Hanoi city. Policy intervention is assessed for selected cities in Vietnam. Two policies are mentioned in this study. The policy of phasing out leaded gasoline has brought a clear improvement of air quality in Vietnam in term of Lead levels in the ambient air. However, the policy on restriction of motorcycles registration was not successful to reduce the number of motorcycles in Hanoi hence no effect on air quality was observed |
