Abstract | The Anammox process is a biological process in which ammonium and nitrite arc directly converted into nitrogen gas. In this study, Ananlmox process was performed in gas-lilt reactor and divided into 2 phases. Phase I involved the operation of the Ananlmox process in a gas-lift reactor, and phase II involved the combined SHARON/ Ananlmox process. In phase 1, the Anammox process was established in a 4.9 L gas-lift reactor and fed with synthetic wasteww ater. Ananumlx biomass concentration at the beginning was 3.2 g VSS L-1. The reactor operation was maintained for 159 days and reached the nitrogen loadin and removal rate of 2.46 and 2.26 kg (NH4+ - N + NO2 - N) m-3d-1 respectively. The maximum specific nitrogen loading rate was 0.76 g N g VSS-1. In phase 11, the Ananlmox process was operated for 76 days by using the effluent from a SHARON reactor. The anllllonillm and nitrite concentrations in the effluent from SHARON reactor were 267-378 mg NH4- - N L-1 and 270-355 mg N02- - N L-1. The Anammox process in combination with the SHARON process yielded the ammonium and nitrite removal of S2% and 97% respectively. The nitrogen loading and removal rate were 1.77 and 1.42 kg (NH4+ - N + NO2- - N) m-3d-1, respectively. Furthermore, ORP was measured in the effluent from the Anammox gas-lift reactor during this phase. ORP values were in the range of 90 to 200 mV. |
