Abstract | Demand for electricity in Vietnam is expected to increase rapidly during the next twenty years. In order to meet the electricity demand up to 168 TWh (Base Case of Demand) and 200 TWh (High Case of Demand) in 2020, Vietnam's power sector should have a proper plan to expand the generating capacity. Nuclear power is considered such as energy option in the Vietnam's energy context for the period 2000-2020. The first Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) of Vietnam is expected to be built in Ninh Thuan province. Hence, the aim of this study is to assess impacts from NPP to environment at the project site and in vicinity areas for recommendation of its affects in terms of negative and positive behaviors of the construction as well as operation of NPP. Although NPP requires high cost of capital investment but they would be economically cost-effective at based power and large scale in Vietnam. Nuclear power plants can partially compete with imported coal fired power plants after 2015 and makes a significant reduction in coal import. In the long-term perspective, nuclear-based power generation would be indispensable and would help to ensure a security of electricity supply. In addition, nuclear power is favorable from environmental aspects. Nuclear energy option would take an important role in mitigating air pollutant emissions. Total SO, and CO, volume accumulated during the study period in the base scenario with nuclear option would be reduced by 11.36% and 13.62% compared with the scenario without nuclear energy option, respectively, at the same electricity demand level in the case of Base Demand. The construction and operation NPP has been strengthened to natural resources and human living environment in project area and surroundings. The general assessment of negative and positive impacts from project show that construction and operation stages is also causing many adverse effects to environment; however project will be promoted the industrialization and modernization as well as create opportunity for urbanization, improve socio-economv of this area. This study like reference documents provide authorized bodies with necessary scientific document for having successful decision making for building the first nuclear power plant in Viet Nam. |
