AbstractThis study was conducted to quantify nutrient flows in relation to environmental sanitation in urban area of Haiphong city by using MFA, to identify weakness related to solid waste and wastewater management and to propose improvement measures in order to reduce pollution load and resource consumption. The system border was defined by the 5 urban districts in Haiphong city; Hong Bang, Ngo Quyen, Le Chan, Kien An and Hai An districts and their agriculture areas. The system was divided into 8 processes comprised: agriculture, industry, market, collection and sorting, household, septic tank, composting and landfill, and 41 goods. The environmental components such as atmosphere, and groundwater, surface water and soil, and landfill were sinks for the residual flows. A general view of natural, socio-economics conditions, solid waste and wastewater discharged and existing sanitation conditions in the area was obtained. Available data related to nutrients input and output flows of the system were collected during the field study. By using the obtained data, N and P input flows and output flows were estimated. From results obtained from MFA, some environmental weaknesses of the system were identified as follows: N and P in fertilizer supplied to agriculture were quite high and the using of chemical fertilizer was predominated over organic fertilizer. The unreasonable using of fertilizer in agriculture causing fertilizer percolation into soil and water that cause surface and groundwater pollution and depletion of the land of other natural resources and increase the salinity of the soil, rendering a field unfit for further farming. Because of gaps in construction, operation and management of sanitation system, a large amount of nutrient delivered to the -households in forms of food is finally discharged with the excreta, wastewater and solid waste into surface water, ground water or on the soil, resulting in water and soil pollution. This study also proposed 3 mitigation measures to reduce environmental impacts and optimize the nutrient recovery including construction of wastewater treatment plant, composting solid waste and septage, and wastewater treatment plant together with composting of solid waste, most of the compost products and treated wastewater effluent reused in agriculture in the study and surrounding area. From those scenarios some of alternatives also propose in accordance with environmental sanitation planning in Haiphong city
