Abstract | The growth of municipal solid waste in the developing countries creates the environmental pollution due to the beyond proper management level in every municipality. This study attempted to determine the health risks from the organic waste management practices in Tha Klong municipality, Pathumthani province, Thailand. Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) was used as a tool by microbial data of E. coli and Salmonella spp., the microbial concentrations detected from food waste and market waste. Households and market waste sites were used in presenting the respective risks from the sampling sites as the grab samples were used in this study. The laboratory results showed the overall concentration of 3.2 x 105 and 6.5 x 105 MPN/g of E. coli geometric mean concentration in food and market waste while 3.2 x 10' and 1.7 x 106 MPN/g of Salmonella spp. respectively. The yearly risks in the different scenarios, which were assumed according to different hygienic behavior on handling the organic food and market waste resulted in the range of 25 - 1329 cases per 10,000 populations for E. coli in the food waste while 380 - 9343 cases per 10,000 populations in the market waste, while that was reached 100 percent risks in all scenarios, in which defined the risk as the early stages of infection in dose-response assessment in QMRA. The risks were significantly higher than the acceptable risk level defined by USEPA and WHO for drinking water which was used as a guideline acceptable risk in this study. Thus it requires immediate establishment of restrictions, regulations and delivering information of the respective risks to the relevant stake holders and community for the awareness of the prevention the risks |
