Abstract | The study focuses on the development of the larger organized retailers in India whose market share currently constitutes a mere 2% of the USD 180 Billion retailing market in India. This sector although not recognized by the Indian Government earlier has recently been given the status of a sunrise industry. However there are certain problems and challenges facing the larger organized retailers in India. The study discusses and analyzes these challenges by first analyzing the macro and micro economic factors leading to these challenges. It then focuses on discussing the competitive scenarios which the larger organized retailers might face in the future, especially from the unorganized sector. After drawing an illation to the retail environment, the opportunities which exist for the larger retailers are discussed following a gap analyses. Thereafter, the consumption patterns and shopping behavior of the Indian consumers are analyzed, for the purpose of segmenting the market and forecasting the future needs. For this purpose, the consumption patterns in well developed organized retailing environments Such as Thailand have been benchmarked. Finally, the marketing and communication strategies have been formulated following a case study analyses of the largest organized retailer in India, Pantaloons Retail India Ltd. This has been followed by a list of recommendations pertaining to the larger organized retailers who are either currently present or wish to be present in India, finally followed by the conclusion. |
