Abstract | Both developed and developing countries recently are becoming more interested in the development of Small and Medium Enterprises. It is due to reasons of its significant size and vital role in terms of employment generation and potential income generation. Unlike other developing countries, SMEs represent the majority of the enterprise in Cambodia. With the current market economy SMEs play a crucial role in Cambodia. However, their development remains limited due to the constraints of access to finance. The purpose of this study is to find out the financial needs and obstacles towards access to finance by SMEs in Cambodia; and the study also intends to provide some solutions which may overcome these obstacles. Results have been identified; the most current financial needs for SMEs in Cambodia are the working capital and funds for medium and long-term investment. The study also identified that the main obstacles of financing SMEs are the inadequate current laws and the weak legal system to protect lender interests. Moreover, lack of understanding of SMEs entrepreneurs to fulfill financial requirements and inabilities to provide information create barriers for SMEs to get finance from those financial institutions. A strong support from both government and other organizations is needed to assist both financial institutions and SMEs in order to fill up the gap. Laws and regulations need to be enforced to protect lenders' interest. Training and Technical assistance must be provided to both bank staff and SMEs themselves. |
