AbstractIndian Ocean resorts had been experiencing a good tourist season in 2004. Most tourists come from European countries and Australia. The area had been avoided for sometime after the Bali bombings, Iraq invasion, and the threat of SARS. After these problems had begun to be settled, the December 26th 2005 tsunami suddenly brought more worry to the tourism industries of the region. The purpose of this research is to provide practical solutions and recommendations for tourism recovery on Phuket Island. First, I focus on the way to make Phuket more secure for tourists. This means analyzing the weaknesses of the previous early warning system and finding out if the new one is efficient and why. This is the very first step towards making people willing to come back to the impacted areas. Then, I focus on the means to communicate with tourists in order to convince them to spend their holidays in these areas. This process works through numerous promotional tools, especially including an efficient communication and marketing campaign. The research will focus on the implementation of the early warning system first, then on the training of visitors and tourism stakeholders, and finally on the marketing tools used to -et the tourists back to Phuket. For the latter, general issues about tourism recovery will be addressed to provide a basis for recommendations. The other affected areas, financial aspects of recovery and the role of organizations will be out of scope and will be only briefly mentioned. Concrete Suggestions to boost the recovery will be provided in conclusion.
