Abstract | Coral reefs are important for ecology. They are currently destroyed by many factors. From that reason, there has been a great deal or research on coral reefs in order to protect and restore them from destruction which is required information of coral reefs health. To understand the health of coral reefs, scientists have to analyze enormous amount of data and from many perspectives which is often extracted from 2D images contextual data that is collected along with the images. This data is inconvenient and time consuming to analyze. This thesis proposes a software component enabling ecologists to assess the health of a coral reef by combining information from multiple underwater photographs into a 3D scene. The system performs 3D reconstruction of coral reef scenes from 2D uncalibrated images. The reconstruction is divided into two parts: sparse and dense reconstruction. A prototype system incorporates algorithms for 3D coral reef scene generation. The system is a promising step towards automatic 3D visualization of coral reef health |
