Abstract | Septic tanks were used in discharging wastewater (WW) on the nearby area or natural ponds available outside Myingyan prison in Myanmar as the main treatment practice common to other states and regions in the country. The septic tanks were usually overloaded because of overcrowded conditions in the prison, and inefficient performance of wastewater treatment. The result of the effluent from the septic tanks was done and shown in average BOD 272 mg/l which was more than four times populated from the environmental acceptance. It was unacceptable to release directly to the drains without proper treatment to protect human health and the environment After implementing and monitoring and as per performance result, BOD was reached 58mg/l which was very close to minimum Myanmar environmental guidelines. Upon request of the superintendent (SI) of the Myingyan prison, the ICRC initiated assessment and reported to the senior management within the organization. The engineers from Engineering Unit (EU), PD was working alongside the engineers from the ICRC to mutually benefits. Once this pilot project was successful, the PD was expected to use this practice. This paper shows how to develop to get approval from senior management within the organization and the (PD), Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) together with one assigned engineer and how to manage this pilot project with the process of the ICRC guidelines and procedures. This project was started from November 2017 and finished in October 2019. |
