Abstract | The research was conducted focusing on identifying and explaining the similarities and differences in behaviors of individuals from different cultural background as they are affected by both their own national culture and local culture. The five work-related cultural dimensions of Hofstede are used. For the survey, 260 questionnaires were sent to international development projects in Vietnam. The respond rate is 41%. Results showed that personal characteristics of researched groups are followed closely their national cultural dimensions found in Hofstede's study. This finding related to the theory that personal characteristics of individuals are influenced by their dominant national cultural values. In addition, from the research, it showed that Vietnamese and Asian group are closer in cultural dimensions than between Vietnamese and Western group. However, there were no significant differences among groups in terms of working environment. People working in international development projects behave and think in the same direction that could make their performance better. It is also showed that international employees have the tendency of adapting to local culture in order to reach common cultural dimensions in their workplace. This finding stated that local culture could have impacts to behavior of individuals. From these findings, issues on cultural impacts to managing international development projects in Vietnam are highlighted in term of authority, role of informal meeting, open communication, managing conflict, gender issues and ingroup/outgroup phenomena in order to provide cultural adaptation orientation to both Vietnamese and international employees. |
